Dr. Subhash C. Khuntia assumed office of Chairman, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India in May 2018.

He has had a career in Civil service spanning over 36 years. He has been Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka and before that he worked as Secretary (School Education and Literacy), Government of India in Ministry of Human Resource Development.

He was appointed to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1981 and belongs to Karnataka Cadre. In Government of Karnataka, he has served in various capacities in Departments of Finance, Revenue, Personnel, Urban Development, Rural Development and Public Works and Ports. In Government of India, he has served in Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. He also served as Government nominee Director on the Boards of Indian Oil Corporation, ONGC and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation.

Dr. Khuntia is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur from where he did his post-graduation in Computer Science and Physics. He has a Ph.D. in Economics and is also a Law Graduate.

Mr R. K. Sood is an Executive Director in LIC of India the biggest insurer in India.He is fellow of insurance institute of India with varied experiences from marketing to services of life insurance and it's underwriting, reinsurance, housing finance and estate matters, accounts. As Executive Director New Business and Reinsurance he brought about tremendous changes in underwriting of risk. He has also been instrumental in developing End to End underwriting solutions and E policy in LIC.

Sunil Sharma is President of the Institute of Actuaries of India. Sunil is a Fellow member of Institute of Actuaries of India (FIAI) and Fellow member of Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, UK (FIA).

With over 29 years of diversified experience in the Life and Health insurance and reinsurance sector, Sunil has worked across India, USA, UK and Singapore. Sunil Sharma is currently the Appointed Actuary and the Chief Risk Officer for Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company India Ltd.

Prior to joining Kotak Life, he has worked in various positions with ICICI Prudential Life, Swiss Re, GE Financial Assurance Holdings, Inc. and Life Insurance Corporation of India.

Sunil proactively contributes his domain knowledge and expertise to the industry. He has been a regular speaker on various forums like Global Conference of Actuaries, Seminars conducted by CII and other industry bodies. Before being elected as President of IAI, he has served the IAI Council in various capacities. Earlier, as the Chairperson of Wider Field Committee (WFC) he envisioned creating opportunities for actuarial personnel, specifically for students, in areas other than traditional insurance and pension areas.

He endeavor to grow the profession beyond the traditional areas, increase rapport and forge stronger connect with Actuarial profession globally and better coordination with Insurance, Pension and Market regulators.

Mr.Hemant Bhargava is the Chairman In-charge & Managing Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India.

A Master in Economics, Mr. Bhargava joined LIC in 1981 and has handled diverse portfolios across functions in India and internationally, including Marketing & Alternative Channels of distribution, Human Resource, Finance, Pension & Group Schemes, Estate Management & Office Services operations and Information Technology. As head of two of LIC’s biggest zones among the eight, he was instrumental in increasing insurance penetration in fifteen states of India.

Mr. Bhargava, with his expertise in business modeling and execution, has successfully launched a number of new projects in LIC, which includes designing and setting up the Micro Insurance vertical which was LIC’s first comprehensive enterprise-wide initiative in financial inclusion space. LIC’s foray in to credit card as joint venture in collaboration with banking partners, founding LIC Cards Services Limited and launch of ‘LIC Card’ in 2009 was also headed by Mr. Bhargava. The ‘Indian Business Group’ in Mauritius for promoting the business interests of companies of Indian origin, with the High Commissioner of India as the Patron, was founded by Mr. Bhargava as head of LIC’s Mauritius operations. He also played key role in setting up newly formed SBUinternational Operations to manage LIC’s operation in about 11 countries and laid structural design to form a composite insurance company in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Bhargava has been instrumental in shaping strategies of corporate India while serving on the Boards of Indian companies including L&T Limited, ITC Limited, Tata Power Limited, Voltas Limited. Presently he is on the Boards of LIC (International) B.S.C.(c), Bahrain, LIC Housing Finance Limited, LIC HFL Asset Management Company Limited, LIC Pension Fund Limited, LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Limited, LIC Cards Services Limited, Life Insurance Corporation (Nepal) Limited, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of Bangladesh Limited, LIC Lanka Limited, Governing Council of Insurance Information Bureau of India, Office of the Executive Council of Insurers, National Insurance Academy and Insurance Institute of India.

He has also been on the Boards of National Mutual Fund, Mauritius, LIC Mauritius Offshore Limited, LIC HFL Care Homes Limited, LIC Mutual Fund Trustee Pvt Ltd, and IL&FS Limited.

Mr. Hemant Bhargava is an Alumni of Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management. He has studied Strategic Management at ISB, Hyderabad.

Abhijit did his PhD in Process Engineering in 2008 with focus on machine learning application to solve fault detection and diagnosis problem. Since then he is working in the analytics domain and worked with various organizations like NTPC Limited, TCS R & D, SAS R & D and now with Principal Global Services, Pune as Lead Consultant-Analytics. He has primarily worked in fraud identification in claims (and service provider networks) in business domains like healthcare, automotive and home appliances using various advanced statistical and machine learning based methodologies. He is also interested in financial modeling, marketing analytics and building recommendation engines.

Alasdair is a senior manager in PwC’s actuarial practice in India. He spent the first 6 years of his career at PwC UK in London, specialising in reserving and capital advisory work for non-life and health insurers, as well as risk management and data analysis work for the UK National Health Service.

Alasdair is experienced in financial reporting and has managed the actuarial input to the audit of several large general insurance and healthcare insurance companies. In particular he has specialised in the European Union’s insurance regulation, Solvency II, and is part of the technical panel supporting PwC’s advice to clients regarding IFRS17.

Andrew D. Rallis is Executive Vice President and Global Chief Actuary of MetLife. In that capacity he is responsible for the practice of actuarial science across MetLife. Mr. Rallis is also the current president-elect of SOA and is expected to begin his duties as the 71st SOA president at the 2019 SOA Annual Meeting and Exhibit, for the 2019-2020 term.

MetLife has adopted a global operating model for actuarial under Mr. Rallis. Regional Chief Actuaries report jointly to him and their respective CFOs. Global actuarial functions also reporting to Mr. Rallis include Asset/Liability Management (ALM), Actuarial Modeling, Emerging Actuarial Issues and Actuarial Services. In addition, Mr. Rallis is Chairman of MetLife’s captive reinsurers, as well as several internal asset/liability management and risk management committees.

During his term as SOA president, Rallis plans to focus on ways to solidify the reputation of actuaries as trusted advisors and to prepare actuaries to meet the dual demands of globalization and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

He is a frequent speaker at industry meetings globally on ALM and actuarial topics such as the risk management of variable annuities, the impact of low interest rates on insurers, and the transformation of actuarial functions.

Mr. Rallis joined MetLife in 1984 in MetLife's Actuarial Development Program. After attaining Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries in 1992, he was honored with MetLife’s Bailie Award in 1993, awarded periodically to non-officer actuaries in recognition of high standard of performance, sense of integrity and degree of dedication to the Company's various businesses.

He has advanced through roles of increasing responsibility in pricing, valuation and ALM departments and has extensive capital markets, US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), statutory financial reporting and product development experience. He has participated in the Company's adoption of GAAP accounting, the demutualization and funding of the Closed Block, the development of MetLife's economic capital model, actuarial due diligence of and purchase GAAP accounting for various acquisitions, and recent adoption of Embedded Value as an internal management tool.

Mr. Rallis graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1982 with a BS in Physics and a BS in Mathematics. He is Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Andrew Peterson is the Senior Director, International at the Society of Actuaries (SOA) working to implement the SOA’s mission of advancing actuaries as leaders in measuring and managing risk on a global basis. In that capacity he oversees the SOA’s activities outside of North America in advancing the actuarial profession through education and research. Andy works with the Board to establish the SOA’s international strategy and oversees the work of members and staff around the world in implementing that strategy. Prior to taking on this role in mid-2018, Andy served as the Senior Staff Fellow for Retirement where he worked with SOA members to develop and support better retirement systems. Andy received a BS degree in mathematics from Taylor University in 1992. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries. He is also a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance.

In his capacity as Managing Director & CEO, Mr. Anuj Gulati has been responsible for setting up this business and working towards making Religare one of the key players in the Indian Health Insurance industry. In his last role at ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Limited, Anuj was the Director for Services and Business Development. Previously, he has been an entrepreneur and started his career with Procter & Gamble India Limited.

 

In his current role, he is responsible for leading financial sector development initiatives and providing operational support in the areas of insurance, contractual savings, and financial inclusion. His technical assistance and program development work focuses financial sector reform and development, regulatory and supervisory oversight architecture, pension and health insurance reforms, disaster risk financing, agriculture insurance, public- private partnerships, and FinTech.

As secretary of the ADB’s Finance Sector Group (the community of practice) he is also responsible for promoting knowledge management and learning within ADB and engaging more purposefully in external partnerships. Arup represents ADB in International Association of Insurance Supervisors, Islamic Financial Services Board, International Actuarial Association, InsuResilience Global Partnership for Climate and Disaster Risk Finance, and Access to Insurance Initiative.

He has earlier served as Principal Administrator of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) at the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, Joint Director of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, and Officer on Special Duty of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. He started his career as a direct recruit officer with the General Insurance Corporation of India.

He holds Bachelor degree with Honors in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Delhi, Master in International Economics from School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Master in International Business from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.

Ashik is a recently qualified actuary and has around 7 years of experience working with life insurers across India, South Asia, and the UK. He has significant experience in shareholder reporting (across IEV, MCEV and TEV metrics), regulatory reporting (including RBC reporting in Singapore and Sri Lanka), pricing and product development, participating fund management, as well as market research work.

Ashvin has set up the advisory service company – Ashvin Parekh Advisory Services LLP (APAS) in the areas of providing services to the Boards and the management of the financial services sector companies, in June 2013. Ashvin retired as a Senior Partner from Ernst & Young in June 2013, he was with EY for 8 years. After he retired as a Partner in EY, he was associated with EY as a Senior Expert – Advisor till April 2014. Earlier he was the Executive Director of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Pvt. Ltd. from July 2002 till June 2005. He also held senior positions in Arthur Anderson, Price Waterhouse Coopers, KPMG India, KPMG UK, KPMG Dubai and Hindustan Lever Ltd. He has worked in the United Kingdom, Dubai, Australia, Germany and the US on Partner secondment programs for about 11 years outside of India.

Ashvin has done more than 700 projects in the course of 33 years with the large firms. These programs have been in the areas of business strategy and capital expansion. As a part of this he has conducted more than 45 transactions in the joint ventures and merger and acquisition areas.

He has worked on gamut of areas like business strategies, corporate planning, institutional strengthening and business transformation across industries including banking, insurance, pension and capital markets.

In 1999 – 2000 during the reforms in the insurance sector he was closely involved with the government and the regulator in the formation of the regulatory authority and also assisted the regulators office in preparing the regulations for the sector.

Since then he has assisted more than 35 joint ventures in the life, general and health insurance areas. He has assisted these companies from the preparation of business plans till assisting them in seeking regulatory approvals for licensing / registering these companies. He is assisting one of the old private sector bank in selling their stake with a life insurance major. He is retained by major Re-insurance players for providing the regulatory support with regards setting up of their branches in India keeping with The Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2008 and filing of application for setting up such branches in India.

Ashvin has been working closely with the government. In the last 5 years he has been on 9 committees set up by the Finance Minister / Ministry of Finance. He has been assisting all the regulators in the finance sector namely the banking, insurance, pension and capital markets with new reforms.

He has been a member of several committees set up by the Ministry of Finance, RBI, IRDAI and SEBI.

Ashvin is on the boards of reputed insurance and Primary Dealership organizations as Independent Director. He is also a Chairman on the Trust Board of National Pension Scheme since 30th March 2015. NPS has accumulated AUM of more than USD 62 bn.

Dave’s background includes almost 30 years at Allianz Life of North America with responsibilities for Financial Reporting, Experience Analysis and Reinsurance. He is the past chair of the International Actuarial Association’s Insurance Regulation Committee, the past president of the America Academy of Actuaries and a member of the Academy’s Big Data Working Group. He is currently a Senior Consultant with Charles Rivers and Associates and a Board member of the Society of Actuaries.

He graduated from Brigham Young University and has three children and two grand children.

David is Head of P&C, South Asia, Insurance Consulting Technology, Willis Towers Watson. David Maneval helps insurers transform and innovate. Currently with Willis Towers Watson, he was the Head of Reinsurance and Capital Management of a MNC, where he helped release over USD 200 million of capital.

Prior to Willis Towers Watson, he held positon of Chief Reinsurance Officer, AIG Asia Pacific and Head of Actuarial, Asia, Aon Benfield.

Mr. Dharmendra K. Pandit is a Fellow member of the Institute of Actuaries of India and a partner at M/S K. A. Pandit, Consultants and Actuaries. He graduated in Law and subsequently joined the firm in 1973 and was thereby involved in all types of actuarial assignments related to Insurance and Employee Benefits. In his last 40+ years of association with the Firm, he has been involved in many areas of Pensions, Insurance, and Investments etc.

During the former part of his career, his experience in Law helped the Firm to appear before the Income Tax Authorities for approval of Superannuation Funds on behalf of clients. He has played an instrumental role in preparing Defined Benefit Schemes for the PSU and Banking sector besides playing a key role in advising many local and global companies and has been providing his services as Appointed Actuary to Insurance Companies. Apart from presenting innovative papers at various global meets he also gets involved in Educational Activities and was also a member of the Advisory Group on Pensions, Other Employee Benefits & Social Security of the Institute of Actuaries on India.

Dokkie joined Swiss Re in June 2014 and as a Senior Structurer and Transaction Manager focuses on developing, pricing and executing Structured Transactions throughout Asia, being based in Hong Kong.

Before joining Swiss Re Dokkie worked in Hong Kong and the UK at a number of firms including PwC, Prudential and Aviva. He specialised in the development and validation of Economic Capital models for Solvency 2 and in helping firms embed Financial Risk Management, such as ORSA documents, in order to comply with regulations. Other work included audit, completing impact assessments for the upcoming IFRS 4 Phase 2 Accounting standards and supporting due diligence on a number of Asian based transactions.

Dokkie is a South African national, qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in the UK and graduated from the actuarial program at Stellenbosch University in South-Africa. Dokkie is a fan of rugby union and is a father of a young daughter 2 French bulldogs.

Dr Frank Ashe has a consulting practice specialising in risk governance, behavioural finance, risk management, and investments. Risk management covers the gamut from culture and behavioural psychology, to technical matters in derivative risk, to strategy, to asset-liability management, to comparative corporate governance.

He is an Honorary Associate Professor with the Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre. Dr Ashe has worked for over 35 years in Australia, Canada and Asia with consultancies, insurance companies, investment management firms, bond dealers, and financial software houses. He is a regular presenter at industry seminars and colloquia, and was President of the Australian Q-Group 2002-2011.He regularly travels through East Asia and South Asia, consulting, presenting seminars, in-house training and Masters level University courses. Dr Ashe is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Dr Ashe obtained his PhD in Operations Research from the University of New South Wales. He majored in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science, with First Class Honours in Mathematics, from Macquarie University.

Gaurang Shah heads integrated Risk Management across the Group, and enables the organisation to maximise value by embedding common risk management systems and framework. He is also responsible in ensuring that the Bank is Basel compliant. He is the chairman of the Credit Committee and the convenerof Risk Management Committee, First Tier Audit Committee and the New Products Approval Group. He continues to have an oversight on the Insurance and Asset MAnagement businesses of the Group.

Graham Bancroft joined Munich Re in 2009. He has over 39 years of experience in the life insurance industry. He is responsible for Munich Re’s Life financially motivated business across the Asian, Middle East and African regions. Previously he has held senior positions running reinsurance operations in North America and Australia, and various roles with Canadian direct writers on group and individual lines of business. He has completed his Bsc. Honours Actuarial Mathematics. He is a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (US) & a Member of SAS.

Jatin Arora is a Fellow Member of IAI and a Chartered Accountant with over 1.5 decade of rich experience in Risk Management, General Insurance and Life Insurance actuarial work. He is currently working as Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Risk Officer at DHFL General Insurance Ltd. In his current role he works on Digital strategy design and implementation, Product Innovation & Go to market strategy and ERM implementation. He is also the Chairperson of the General Insurance Advisory Group of the IAI. In his previous roles he has worked as Appointed Actuary for some of the leading Private Sector General Insurance companies in India and has worked in US and UK markets on Actuarial and ERM assignments.

Hemant Kumar is working as Group Manager with Principal Global Services, Pune. He is a Fellow member of IAI and is leading the actuarial function in his organisation. He brings to the table rich operational experience over 14 years from Air India where he worked in Flight Operations department. He moved to the actuarial space in late 2012 when he joined Mercer Consulting where he was managing actuarial valuation of Defined Benefit pensions for US, Thailand and UAE geographies. Currently he is leading the actuarial teams supporting US DB business, US life insurance and Hong Kong Defined Contribution pension business. He is a health enthusiast and loves to go for treks.

Jens Perch Nielsen has chaired an actuarial professorship at Cass Business School London since 2012. Before that, Jens worked in almost all areas relevant to actuarial science in practice. In insurance and pension companies, as a consultant and as an entrepreneur. While working in practice, Jens wrote a long list of academic papers inspired by the work he did in practice and by his original research in machine learning. The interest in machine learning techniques originates from his Phd-thesis in statistics from UC-Berkeley 1990 on the mathematical theory behind cross-validation. Jens invented “Time Pension” that changed the Danish pension market in the beginning of this millennium from a primarily with-profit market to a well structured defined contribution market with organised life cycle structure. The product won the IPE European Innovation price on one occasion. Jens is also currently looking to meet pension companies in India who he may be able to collaborate with ahead of 2021 when starts professionalising his insights in pension.

Joanne is a Principal and managing consultant for Milliman’s health practice in London. She has experience in health markets from the US, Europe to Asia and the Middle East. She works on traditional actuarial work such as pricing, capital modelling and reserving, but also has significant experience in managed care analytics and advises her clients on calculation methods for assessing the value of health interventions. . She has significant experience in both the public and private health sector.

Critical Illness Experience in Asia and Implications For India.

This talk will look at a large survey carried out on critical illness products in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and China. The survey covered the experience of 39 leading companies in these markets. It looked at 1.1 million claims and over 350 million life years of exposure. The presentation will look at trends in diseases and difference in the experience in the various markets as well as address some of the implications that might affect Dread Disease in India.

John Ferguson started his actuarial career in South Africa, where he qualified as a Fellow of The Institute of Actuaries (UK). He then moved to the US where he was involved in product pricing for term life, Universal Life and Variable Universal Life products. John joined Gen Re in their Shanghai office 12 years ago. He is currently responsible for pricing life and health products in India, China, Hong Kong, and the ASEAN countries. After looking at the results of the Critical Illness survey and in particular the effect of BMI on incidence rates, John has resolved to lose weight!

He spent the early part of his career for five years in the UK as part of a pensions and actuarial consulting team at Aon. Kulin has Worked in UK, Americas and across Asia, Actuarial valuations pension costs across Canada, US, UK, India and across South East Asia, as per relevant GAAPs, Employee communications and education on pension plan roll outs, Rewards and Benefits structuring and total rewards communication, HR due diligence for Mergers and Acquisitions and Integration advise for rewards, A signing actuary for pension and other employee benefits costs. He also Worked with government bodies in the UK such as the Department of Works and Pensions, The Pensions Regulator and Pension Protection Fund on various pension reform and implementation of legislation for pension scheme wind ups and PPF from 2003-2007. Kulin is a Chairperson of Pension Advisory Committee to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, India & a Regular speaker at industry events regarding employee benefits and rewards issues.

Kunj Behari Maheshwari is a partner at Willis Towers Watson Actuarial Advisory LLP based out of Gurugram, India. Kunj joined Willis Towers Watson in 2006 and has more than 12 years’ actuarial experience, specialising in providing consulting support to life insurance companies. Kunj is the Chairperson of the Institute of Actuaries of India’s advisory group on IFRS 17 (Ind AS 117).

Manish is a Senior Consultant at Willis Towers Watson with over 10 years of experience working mainly in the personal and commercial lines reserving, product development and financial modelling for general insurance companies and reinsurers domiciled in the UK, India and Southeast Asia.

Marjan Qazvini is an Assistant Professor at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. She graduated with a PhD from the University of Melbourne in Actuarial Studies in 2016.

Masaaki Yoshimura was elected as President of the International Actuarial Association (IAA) in 2017 and began his tenure on January 1, 2018. As President, Mr. Yoshimura also served as chair of the Executive Committee and of the Council, as well as being an Officer of the organization. His term as IAA President ended December 2018, and he works as Immediate Past President now.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Mathematics, from Kyoto University, then went on to obtain a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Graduate School of Management of Boston University.

Mr. Yoshimura began his career at Sumitomo Life, a Japanese mutual life insurance company, where he worked for about 30 years. During that period, he accumulated a wide variety of experience in the areas of Corporate Actuarial, International Investment, and Planning and Research. In addition, he assumed the role of General Manager of Corporate Risk Management, served as an Appointed Actuary, and spent three years in the United States as Chief Representative of Sumitomo’s New York office.

Masaaki joined Milliman’s Tokyo office in April, 2012 and became "Representative in Japan" in January, 2013. He co-managed the Tokyo office and had been consulting on issues related to Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). He assumed the role of "Special Advisor" in January, 2018.

He has served as General Secretary of the Institute of Actuaries of Japan (IAJ) and is currently a board member of the IAJ and Chairman of the CERA Qualification Committee

Matt Battersby is Vice President and Chief Behavioural Scientist at RGA. Based in RGA’s London (U.K.) office, he is responsible for the effective development and deployment of behavioural science-informed models to RGA and to its clients for use in underwriting, claims, risk management and customer engagement.

Prior to joining RGA, Matt was with the communications firm Hill+Knowlton Strategies for more than a decade. Matt has a Master of Science (MSc) in Behavioural Science from the London School of Economics and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Economics and Philosophy from the University of Bristol.

Maurizio, based in Hong Kong, leads PwC’s Actuarial Services practice which consists of teams in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore. He joined PwC Hong Kong in April 2018. During the past 19 years, Maurizio has assumed various positions at Zurich Insurance Group, including Group Chief Life Actuary based at headquarter in Switzerland and CFO of Asia-Pacific and Middle East based in Hong Kong. Prior to that he was a consultant with a leading actuarial consulting firm for seven years.

Maurizio has earned a bachelor’s degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science from the University La Sapienza in Italy and he is a member of the Institute of Actuaries in Italy.

Michael Tichareva is the Managing Director and Principal of National Standard Finance Africa, and affiliate of National Standard Finance, LLC having co-founded and formalised the operations in 2014. He is responsible for the Africa strategy and the strategic and day to day operational management. In addition, he is involved in the origination and structuring of sovereign, sub-sovereign and private sector infrastructure & real estate deals across Africa with a strong focus on developmental finance to improve quality of lives of people and is constantly involved in a number of such initiatives.

Michael has recently been focusing on developing financing and insurance solutions to facilitate mining production, agricultural production as well as the associated commodities trading in mining and agricultural commodities in Africa given the richness of the continent in mining and agricultural resources that can be developed to improve the quality of lives of its people. Emphasis is on both primary production and value addition industries to process the raw commodities to create value for export. Michael has also been involved in renewable energy and low-cost housing development insurance and financing initiatives and continues to seek opportunities for involvement in these areas. This is effectively impact investing.

Michael has extensive relationships in both the public and private sectors in Africa and is responsible for building strategic networks and relationships in different parts of the World to progress National Standard Finance’s initiatives in Africa. Michael believes in developing solutions that are suitable for Africa within the global framework and he is currently leading initiatives that he believes will lead to accelerating Africa’s infrastructure development so that Africa can compete sustainably in the global economy. One of the solutions involve promoting the increased use of credit enhancement instruments in infrastructure finance in Africa, a structured finance solution that combines elements of banking and insurance solutions. Michael has performed coverage roles where he has been involved in deal origination and client relationship management since 2005 at Old Mutual and Nedbank in South Africa and currently at National Standard for the rest of Africa and globally.

Michael worked as a senior banker at Nedbank, one of South Africa’s largest banks, where he was involved in real estate finance deal origination and structuring as well as on-going client service and relationship management. In this role, he had exposure to both the Debt Capital Markets and the Equity Capital Markets and he has extensive knowledge of investment banking products. He also served as a Trustee of the NedGroup Retirement Funds and was a member of the Investment Committee and the Communication Committee. He also served on the Management Committee of the NedGroup Disability Scheme. Michael served as Deputy Chair of the Employment Equity Forum of the Property Finance Division. Michael is an investment and banking professional who has worked in various senior roles within the UK at AON Hewitt, South Africa at Alexander Forbes and Old Mutual, and Zimbabwe at Old Mutual for the past 20 years.

On actuarial practice, Michael is a banking actuary who leads a team of actuarial professionals in delivering banking consulting assignments that include among others IFRS 9 expected credit loss modelling and credit scorecard development for banks. Michael is looking to engage in a wide range of banking related assignments as he works to expand actuarial practice in banking. He currently leads at a global level in developing banking practice for actuaries and continues to present at various international platforms on the involvement of actuaries in banking practice.

Michael is a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA) having qualified in 2004 through the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries (UK) in 2004. He holds an Honours degree in Actuarial Science from National University of Science and Technology, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (1999). Michael also holds an MBA from Wits Business School (South Africa) (2012) and attended some of his electives at Fuqua School of Business, Duke University (USA) (2010) majoring in Investment Banking and Finance related subjects. He did his MBA research project on a banking related subject entitled “Analysis of Risk Adjusted Performance Measures in a Property Finance Business” where he gained in depth understanding of banking risk management frameworks, risk adjusted performance measurement frameworks and the economic capital management of banking institutions.

Michael is a former member of Council of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and he is a former Chairperson of the Education Board of the Actuarial Society. He is also a former Chairperson of the Banking Committee for the Actuarial Profession in South Africa, a position he held for 8 years to 31 December 2017. He holds other various roles within the Actuarial Society and has led a number of key initiatives over the past few years. Most notably, Michael led the development of the first ever banking qualifying subject for actuaries over a 5 year period that was finally launched by the Actuarial Society of South Africa in 2015. This banking initiative for actuarial practice, a first in the World, has received great international attention within the global actuarial profession. Michael is the current Chairperson of the recently established Banking Working Group of the International Actuarial Association (“IAA”). Michael has been an external examiner of Actuarial Science Honours degree research projects at the University of Pretoria in South Africa since 2012, and continues to lecture actuarial students taking the banking fellowship and investment fellowship subjects for the Actuarial Society of South Africa.

Neha is a Consulting Actuary at Milliman’s India office and has recently qualified to become an actuary. She joined the firm as an Actuarial Analyst with the India office of Milliman in Sep 2012.

Neha has almost 10 years of experience in health insurance actuarial consulting, product pricing, reserving, data analytics, and project management.

Before joining Milliman, Neha worked as an actuarial analyst at OptumInsight, part of UnitedHealthGroup as an Actuarial Analyst specializing in US healthcare work.

Philip is a consultant in Milliman's life insurance practice, based in Mumbai. He supports projects in India and the Asia-Pacific region, primarily working on embedded value and M&A projects. Philip is a member of the IAI Advisory Group on IFRS 17.

Pournima Gupte joined the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) as the Member (Actuary) in January 2015. She is responsible for all the actuarial aspects of the Indian Insurance Industry at IRDAI.

She has been working in the Indian Insurance Industry for more than 30 years in various capacities in public as well as private life insurance companies. Ritobrata is a Consulting Actuary with about 17 years of experience in the Indian retirement and employee benefits market. He has worked extensively on actuarial valuations of employee benefit schemes as well as general benefits and actuarial consulting, where he has assisted clients in the design, implementation, financing and administration of benefit schemes. He has worked with Willis Towers Watson India since 2010 as a Consulting Leader. Prior to joining Willis Towers Watson, Rito was with Deloitte Consulting, where he set up and led their Actuarial and Rewards practice that supports Deloitte's US-based and other global clients. Shaun Levitan is a Co-founder and executive director of Colourfield Liability Solutions (South Africa’s largest liability-driven investment manager). He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and a CFA Charter holder. Shaun pioneered asset liability modelling techniques in South Africa in the early 2000s and has always had a passion for using quantitative techniques to mitigate institutional liability obligations which forms a key part of his day to day responsibilities at Colourfield.
